Google Keyword Ranking Experiment – Do Automated Tools Work?

Google Keyword Ranking Experiment - Setting The Scene

I believe that like traditional offline marketing, Internet marketing is all about making people aware of your products. In the offline world people use focus groups, surveys and competitions to gather marketing data. In the online world people use keywords, which are words, people type into the search engines.

Connecting Keywords To Products

People type words into search engines, hit search and hope to see material relevant to their search. Google wants you to see relevant results so it ranks results in order of most relevant to least relevant. Google keyword ranking is based on a system of evaluating web pages and deciding which one is the best. This would be easy if there were only 3 or 4 pages, but there aren’t, there are millions.

So as a creator and promoter of products, what do you do if you want your product to appear on the first page of Google as a relevant result for a keyword search?

Current Internet Marketing Efforts

For the last 12 months I’ve promoted my sites by writing short articles that discuss various topics that can be found on my various websites. The idea is that if someone likes an article they will click on the link in the article to go through to my website where they can find more information.

This method of Internet marketing is called Article Marketing, a form of search engine optimization or SEO for short.

Future Marketing Efforts

So the Google keyword ranking experiment is just that. An experiment to see what effect if any, a tool called Article Marketing Automation (AMA) has. This tool is designed to submit articles on your behalf to hundreds of sites instead of the 10 or so I have time to submit to.

How will the Google keyword ranking experiment work?

The Aim - The aim of the test is to see if a site can be ranked just using the AMA tool. This will tell me it actually does something.

The Method – I’m going to set up a keyword optimized page right here on GCE. And guess what, your actually on it right now! Can you guess what keyword phrase this article is optimized for?

Next I’m going to create 1 article per week for 3 weeks. Each article will have 400 words. The articles will be uploaded to into AMA.

In theory this should generate:

3 links per day for the first week (21 links)
6 links per day for the second week (42 links)
21 + 42 = 63 links
9 links per day for a week for the third week (63 links)
63 + 63 = 126

Hypothesised result – My other internet marketing tool Market Samurai has told me that all things being equal if I have a keyword optimized page (like this one) and I create 90 links to the page (which is what AMA should do) that this exact page your on now should rank on the fist page of Google for the term it’s optimized for, for those of you playing along that term is “Google keyword ranking experiment”.

Let the experiment begin. I’ll keep you updated.
Cheers,
Justin.
